Ben Affleck popped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and during the visit, it was "revealed" the late night host had shot a cameo for the film that wound up on the cutting room floor. Of course, there was footage, including Henry Cavill's Man of Steel and even Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor.
Weeks before Dawn of Justice's premiere, Affleck was part of Kimmel's post-Oscars show, and he talked about the Zack Snyder superhero film. During their conversation, a gag was revealed: Supposedly, Kimmel had been part of a scene shown in trailers, where Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent meet at Lex Luthor's party.
In the scene, the two DC Comics superheroes discuss their alternate personas without the other one knowing. As Variety reports, Kimmel pops into the party and, as the most obnoxious guest ever, not only meddles in the conversation but also reveals their secret identities to everyone in the party, including Luthor.
"You're Superman," Kimmel tells Cavill in character, then turning to Affleck. "Would you take a picture with us? Get one of me and Supe, I got to get this on the 'Gram."
Annoyed at having his secret persona become public, the Kryptonian decides to dump Kimmel in space as he's rapping about Bruce Wayne being Batman and Clark Kent being Superman. After flying into space, Kimmel lands in Mars, where, of course, his arch-nemesis Matt Damon is hanging out and cultivating potatoes.
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice has been criticized for lacking humor and generally taking itself too seriously (even comic book megafan Kevin Smith said the movie lacked "heart"), so in retrospect, would it really have been that terrible to have Kimmel spoiling secret identities early in the movie?
Much like happened with Snyder's previous DC Comics film, Man of Steel, in Batman v. Superman the three major superheroes (them and Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman) don't try to hide their identities -- or at least not from each other. So perhaps there could be space for Kimmel's antics in future Justice League films.
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is in theaters now.
