ABC's hit daytime talk show "Live!" has gone through a number of host changes. First it was hosted by Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford. Then Kelly Ripa took over for Kathie Lee, followed by the Regis' departure in 2011. Regis was finally replaced recently after a number of guest hosts by former NFL player Michael Strahan. Ripa took over for Kathie Lee in 2001, so she worked for 10 years with her co-host Regis. This is why people are so shocked to hear that Regis and Kelly reportedly haven't talked since he retired in 2011.
The 42-year-old Ripa made the surprising admission on Wednesday when speaking with The Hollywood Reporter. Ripa was attending an event for the 35 Most Powerful People in Media List in New York City, when she revealed the news. Both Ripa and Strahan are on the list, but not Regis. Kelly was asked to compare her former sidekick Regis and her current sidekick Strahan. "Well they're both incredible storytellers," Kelly said. "They are both fiercely competitive. And they're both incredible football players." When asked if she has kept in touch with Regis, Kelly simply said, "I haven't seen him, no."
Is there anything more to the fact that the longtime co-hosts haven't kept in touch since Regis' retirement? Probably not. I'm sure Kelly is busy with her career and Regis (81-years-old) is starting his career back up again this summer. Most likely it's simply just a case of two stars losing touch with each other. However, you never know what is going on in the celebrity world.
Regis is making an interesting career move this summer when he hosts a round table sports show on the Fox Sports network. Fox Sports will be launching its own 24 hour sports network to compete with ESPN and Regis apparently is the big name TV star they wanted. Regis will host the daily sports show "Rush Hour" on Fox Sports 1 set to launch in August.
It sounds like Regis and Kelly may have more to talk about soon, when Regis finds his way back into the talk show hosting circles this summer.
