The Voltron: Legendary Defender animated series on Netfilx has been met with positive marks when it came on June 2016. With a second season scheduled for January 2017, reports also arise that the live-action adaptation of the franchise is being worked on by Universal after 12 years.

Deadline confirms that David Hayter is currently working on the script for the movie. Hayter, known for his work on the first two X-Men films (X-Men and X2) and Watchmen, is also known in the video game industry as the voice behind the English-language appearances of Solid Snake, the lead character of the Metal Gear Solid franchise.

Universal obtained the project from the Dreamworks Animation deal, along with other projects. Attempts on bringing the combining giant robot has been going on since 2004, according to /Film. It has been going around for some time, with different productions and directors taking on the film. The last reports were on 2010, when producers Ted Koplar and Richard Suckle insisted that development for the live-action film is still happening, with an "A-level" scriptwriter to join the team and rewrite the script.

Voltron: Defender of the Universe (or simply known as Voltron) is a popular animated series back in the 80's. Its first season is known as the "Lion Force Voltron", which is an adaptation of the Japanese series Beast King GoLion. It follows a team of five teenagers piloting five robot lions that combine into a giant robot, the titular Voltron. Set in the planet Arus, the Keith, Lance, Pidge, Hunk and Princess Allura protect the planet from King Zarkon and his Ro-Beasts. The second season, known as the "Vehicle Team Voltron," follows a different story, adapted from the series Armored Fleet Dairugger XV in Japan. A third season was planned, but the low popularity of the second season caused its cancellation. The Lion Force Voltron, though, received a movie and sequels, including 1998's Voltron: The Third Dimension and 2011's Voltron Force
