Hannibal's latest episode, "Entrée," brought the story of Red Dragon into play with FBI trainee Miriam Lass' encounter with Dr. Lector. Though fans know that this intense scene is meant for Will Graham, it was still nice to see it considering we probably will not get to witness it playing out just like the original storyline. That said, tonight's episode, "Sorbet," has the audience aware of Hannibal's true identity (as usual) but also brings in actress Gillian Anderson as his former therapist. What does this mean for the Chesapeake Ripper and the FBI? (SPOILERS to follow)
"Entrée" opens with mental institute patient Dr. Gideon (Eddie Izzard) killing a nurse in the same way that the Chesapeake Ripper killed his victims. Will and the FBI are hesitant to believe that this man is the actual Chesapeake Ripper and decide to dig deeper. As an audience, we know that he is not the actual killer he claims to be, just a copycat of sorts.
We get to see Gideon attempt to convince Will and Dr. Bloom, both of whom are not easily swayed. However, the institute's head doctor, Dr. Chilton, is convinced that he has had the serial killer in his custody for so long. We later find out that Chilton most likely described the Chesapeake Ripper's killing techniques in order to force a confession out of Gideon, which of course gave Gideon enough detail to perform the copycat killing.
We get to see some back-story as well with Crawford taking a trainee under his wing during the Chesapeake Ripper case. Miriam Lass was a young FBI recruit that Crawford saw some potential in. Unfortunately, as we learned at the end of the episode, she got too close. Throughout the reopened investigation, Crawford receives mysterious phone calls that have a recording of Lass reaching out to him. This pushes his buttons obviously, convincing him that the Ripper is still out there tormenting him. He is correct.
In order to coerce the real Ripper out of hiding, the FBI gives tabloid journalist Freddie Lounds a story about Dr. Gideon being the confirmed Ripper. This angers Hannibal, which leads us into tonight's episode where it looks like the Ripper is back in action.
Here is a preview clip of "Sorbet," which guest stars Gillian Anderson as Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier:
