Selena Gomez, being one of the executive producer "13 Reasons Why" is very grateful for the success of her project. It is reported that the film adaptation of the bestselling 2007 YA book by Jay Asher, became the most streamed series for multiple weeks. Though due to the plot of the story which presented the death of the teen stars Hannah Baker and Alex, it triggers disapproval from the critics and suggests to cancel the show.
Gomez has been in defense to her project with regards to its content. Many are campaigning not to watch "13 Reasons Why". The executive producer verifies that they kept the original flow of the story based on the novel. Many school counselors recommended that students shall refrain from watching it because it may inflict similar behavior or self-injury, as reported by New York Times.
"13 Reasons Why" has sparked controversy after the rating TV-MA received from New Zealand for its graphic depiction of rape and teen suicide. To adapt to the negative response from the show, Netflix said that they will be adding extra precautions for the viewers. Psychologists said that the film's portrayal of suicide is highly dangerous for vulnerable teens. But Netflix claimed that the main goal of the film is to drive families to be more open to their children.
According to the actor, Dylan Minette, the show succeeded at its main goal. He said that it is important that this sensitive topic should be faced. And that is what "13 Reasons Why" is doing right now.
"The main goal, overall, is to start conversations that we think are necessary to be had and to bring these issues to light and to show them in a real way," Minette said.
