Reports confirm that 17 adorable puppies were dumped alongside Indiana's State Park Road and thankfully rescued by animal lover Karen Read on Friday evening (May 10) before any of them were injured. Read claims that she witnessed someone in a gold SUV abandon the pups by the side of the road - she managed to collect 9 of the canines (plus their mom)... after arriving at the scene, her hubby wrangled up eight more. The dogs were promptly transported to Valparaiso's Lakeshore PAWS where they are currently awaiting adoption!
While cruising along State Park Road (east of Indiana Highway 49), Read spotted several little balls of fur up ahead in her path. As soon as she pulled up, she witnessed an unidentified SUV zoom away. And that's when she discovered the abandoned pups. ABC Chicago reports that she quickly called her husband for help, and the couple managed to save a total of 18 dogs (17 of them puppies).
Animal control crews soon arrived at the scene and took the pups to the local shelter to get checked out. According to a Lakeshore PAWS Facebook "pupdate," the 17 puppies are mixed Labs from at least two seperate litters, ranging in age from 6-12 weeks old.
Read told CBS Chicago that she was angry someone would have the nerve to dump little pups on the side of the road like that. They most likely would not have survived the night - "It was very cold that night, so I fear to think what would have happened to them if I hadn't come along right when I did... Good grief. I was really angry that night, and I'm trying not to be a judgmental person... I don't know what kind of situation they were in, but I think it was a pretty reckless and callous act that they did."
Thankfully, all the pups are in good health and currently awaiting new homes! Anyone interested in adopting the puppies must fill out an adoption survey and visit the shelter between 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Coco's Canine Cabana, 405 Elm St. in Valparaiso.

Police are still currently looking for the person in the SUV who abandonded the dogs.
