WWE's "Payback" pay-per-view aired Sunday night from the Allstate Arena in Chicago and featured three title changes, the return of CM Punk and John Cena vs. Ryback for the WWE Championship in the main event in a Three Stages of Hell Match.

Sheamus faced Damien Sandow in the pre-show and won with the Brogue Kick.

The Triple Threat match between Wade Barrett, The Miz and Curtis Axel for the Intercontinental Championship opened the main show. The newest "Paul Heyman Guy" took home the gold. Miz locked Barrett in the Figure Four but Axel ran into the ring and pinned the champ while Miz had him in the submission move.

AJ Lee beat her former best friend, Kaitlyn, for the Divas Championship after she locked her in a second Black Widow submission hold.

Dean Ambrose retained his United States Championship against Kane in the third match on the main card. Kane went outside to take apart the announce table and tried to choke slam Ambrose through the wood, but the champ countered with a DDT onto the floor and went back into the ring. Kane could not get back by the 10 count and was counted out.

Alberto Del Rio regained the World Heavyweight Championship from Dolph Ziggler after he assaulted the champ's recently concussed head. Ziggler mustered up the energy for the Zig Zag but could not get up quickly enough and Del Rio superkicked him to score the pin. The match seemed to pull off the double turn as the crowd booed Del Rio and Ziggler was portrayed as a victim.

CM Punk returned in his hometown of Chicago to raucous cheers and defeated Chris Jericho. As expected, the two put on a great match. Punk hit the GTS toward the end of the match but Y2J kicked out. Jericho hit the Codebreaker, but Punk refused to stay down. In the end, Y2J locked in a second Walls of Jericho but Punk fought out of it and hit the GTS twice in a row for the pin.

The Shield (Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns) defeated Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton to retain the Tag Team Championship. Bryan ha Rollins in the No Lock but Reigns broke it up. Orton then tried to RKO Reigns but the Shield member countered it. Orton avoided running into his partner, turned around and planted Reigns with the RKO, but Rollins kicked Bryan in the head and pinned him.

John Cena retained his WWE Championship against Ryback in the Three Stages of Hell Match. Ryback won the first fall, a Lumberjack Match, after he countered the STF and planted Cena with the Shell Shocked. The first match featured a cool spot when Cena flew off the top turnbuckle with a crossbody and basically took out every lumberjack as they beat up Ryback.

The champ won the second fall, a Tables Match, when he countered a Shell Shocked attempt into an Attitude Adjustment to put Ryback through a table.

Ryback beat up Cena on the outside and power bombed him through the announce table before the third fall, an Ambulance Match, officially began. The two fought their way toward the ambulance and even started hitting each other with parts of the vehicle, including the door, panels and emergency lights.

Cena won the third fall and the match when he put Ryback through the roof of the ambulance with an Attitude Adjustment.
