Reports confirm that Jeffrey Trevino, the husband of missing Minnesota woman Kira Trevino, was arrested on Tuesday (Feb. 26) on suspicion of murder. The 30-year-old Mall of America store manager was last seen by her husband on Friday, and her abandoned car was discovered by police on Monday containing her cell phone and purse. After conducting a search of the couple's home later that day, law enforcement claim that they found enough evidence to connect 39-year-old Trevino to the crime. Although it is suspected that Kira Trevino was ultimately murdered, she is still considered a missing person as the case continues to be investigated.
Trevino was last seen by her husband at their shared St. Paul home on Friday - police were called when she didn't turn up for work at the infamous mall on Saturday. Family members confirm that her cell phone and purse were later found in Kira's abandoned white 2010 Chevy Cobalt on Monday. Mall of America security discovered the vehicle on a parking ramp at around 4:55 a.m. While police obtained a search warrant to investigate the home, family and friends made several media appearances, begging for Kira's safe return home.
Trevino, a store manager at the popular teen clothing store Delia's, was a very reliable worker - it would be out-of-character for her to just not show up without telling anyone.
Co-worker and close friend Tara Hall told the Star Tribune that it's normal for Kira to park on the west side of the ramp where the car was found, but it was odd that she would have parked in such an isolated and difficult location.
Authorities who canvassed the car said there was "evidence that concerned investigators." They would not elaborate any further on details. Security personnel are currently reviewing surveillance footage for any clues that could shed light on Trevino's disappearance.
According to friend Jackie Arrando, "This is absolutely 100 percent out of character for her. She would never, ever just not show up for work or go somewhere without letting people know. Never. We've been friends for a long time, everyone is really worried."
"We are looking to see if any suspicious activity is related to this disappearance, as we do with any missing persons case," said St. Paul Police Sgt. Paul Paulos. "She is an adult, but she has been reported missing, and this is an active case. We recognize that this is important to her family and to her friends, and it's important to us as well."
Family members from around Texas and Wisconsin recently flew to Minnesota to help with the investigation. Kira's 29-year-old sister Keri Anne Steger announced to KARE 11, "Kira, if you're watching this, I hope you're safe and I hope you come home. We're just very worried and concerned and we're going to do everything we can to find you."
Jeffrey Trevino is currently being held at Ramsey County Jail on suspicion of homicide.
Police are still handling the case as an "active investigation," Paulos said. Trevino is described as 5-foot-3-inch tall, 110 pounds female with shoulder length blonde hair and green eyes.
Anyone with information that could lead police to locate Trevino is encouraged to call the St. Paul Police Department at 651-266-5650. Further updates will be posted to the department's Twitter, @sppdPIO.
